If ever there was a good soldier during the Cold War it was CIA counterintelligence specialist Edward Wilson (Matt Damon) in the epic drama "The Good Shepherd" (Universal 3 1/2 stars). If you measure what a man gives up for his comrades and country, there would be few to match Wilson. It seems that, as the movie goes on, you shudder and wonder what more this guy could sacrifice. Each time he gives something, one ... [full story]

Q: We are redoing an old farmhouse in the country using a shoestring budget, so we need ideas that look great but don't cost much. For example, we can't replace the wood floors - they were lost to a fire before we bought the house (the reason we could afford it in the first place). What do you recommend? My husband knows how to install ceramic tiles, but aren't they out of character for an ... [full story]

Maybe it's just the profession I'm in or the era, but I've always been intrigued by the way co-workers have viewed themselves. Frankly, I must have worked around optimistic people because by and large they seemed to have an inflated sense of their talent, skills and value. I rarely have come across people who were actually better than they thought. As the years pass and I meet more people, I've come to the conclusion that ... [full story]

Q: The antique washstand seen in this photo has been passed down in our family from generation to generation. Although we don't have any official documentation, we believe an ancestor who was an accomplished carpenter originally made it. We do know that we descended from a long line of German carpenters and cabinetmakers; therefore, there is some creditability to the family history. In any event, it had been forgotten and stored in the basement of ... [full story]

With Easter approaching, our thoughts naturally turn to bunnies, a species that has proliferated throughout children's literature like - well - rabbits. From Peter Rabbit to Benjamin Bunny to the Velveteen Rabbit and the Runaway Bunny, most adults have a favorite character from the Leporidae world. One usually left out of this sentimental appreciation, however, is Uncle Wiggily, once a popular figure in books, games and newspaper comics, called by expert and author Ted Hake ... [full story]

We discovered the joys of Ireland during a glorious two-week vacation last summer. We found the Emerald Isle a gracious, welcoming country whose people are more than willing to chat and offer directions (whether they know the way or not). The Irish adore laughing and making visitors laugh and have never met a person they don't like. So we asked ourselves an obvious question: Now that we are both septuagenarians, or just about, why not ... [full story]
