Q: We are worried because our veterinarian told us that our puppy needs to have surgery to repair a heart defect. Our veterinarian has referred us to a veterinary teaching hospital associated with a college of veterinary medicine where a veterinary cardiologist and a surgery specialist practice. Our veterinarian has tried to comfort us by saying that the surgery is routine and that the survival rate is high. Even though we have had our dog ... [full story]

ZEELAND, Mich. - For Americans who dread the onset of Daylight Saving Time (DST), which steals an hour of precious sleep every year -- unfortunately, time is not on your side. This year for the first time, DST will last from the second Sunday in March to the first Sunday in November -- four weeks longer than usual. The change was mandated by the Energy Policy Act of 2005, with the idea that longer daylight ... [full story]

Yet in bankruptcy documents filed Wednesday in the long-running priest sex-abuse scandal, church officials claim the diocese owns about $96 million in property. Headed uphill on a fairly steep on-ramp, I spied a gap ahead in the heavy freeway traffic. I gave a good goose to the throttle on the new BMW K1200GT sport-touring motorcycle and aimed for the gap. I ended up a good quarter-mile ahead of where I'd intended to go. Good grief! What powers this thing?   NEW BMW - The new BMW K1200GT is a motorcycle for all seasons. It has optional heated seats, handgrips and electronic ... [full story]

Richard Cheney and his sizable entourage have returned from nearly nine days in the Orient, Australia and the Middle East. We are moved to wonder anew if vice presidents, like oversized pets, might better be kept close to home. A half-century ago one of our more provocative veeps, Richard Nixon, traveled two weeks on what was intended to be a goodwill mission through Latin America. He became a target of riotous throngs from Montevideo to ... [full story]

Stevie Wonder is not only a legendary singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. He's also one of the most socially-conscious artists out there. Through his music and his activism, he has tried to improve the world in his own uplifting way. He's been described as the songwriter whose songs can make you smile even when you don't want to. He pens socially-conscious lyrics - not in bitterness or resignation - but in an accurate yet hopeful light. ... [full story]

There's a part of me that will never forgive the neighbor lady for ratting me out when she saw me smoking behind the shed. I was in the eighth grade, and a lifetime later, I still cringe from the humiliation. Maybe that's why a reader's question has stuck with me months after receiving it. She was fretting because the husband of a pregnant friend continued to smoke around the mother-to-be. Should she say something about ... [full story]

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A study published Tuesday on possible health risks of antioxidant supplements is based on flawed methodology and ignores the broad totality of evidence that comes to largely opposite conclusions, experts said today from the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University.   “This is a flawed analysis of flawed data,” OSU experts said of the JAMA research. The research, which was published in this week’s edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association, concluded ...
