The percentage of 2006 high school seniors graduating with a Certificate of Initial Mastery (CIM) in Deschutes County schools range between 0% (Marshall High School) and 45% (Sisters High School)SALEM, Ore. - State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced Wednesday that a total of 37,912 students completed four years of high school in 2006. School board members approved, by unanimous vote at Tuesday evening’s meeting, a stronger weapons policy – the first revision to the policy since October 1999.
Peter M. Miller, director of alternative learning options, recommended that the board approve revised language that includes additional items banned on school property or at school activities, and also toughens the disciplinary action if the policy is violated.

I heard a few days ago on the world news that a house fire with fatalities could have been prevented by smoke detectors. The victims were too poor to buy them. Smoke detectors are under 10 bucks now, however, if you are poor that may be a lot. Why not allow the smokers to “swap” their saved empty cigarette packs for smoke detectors and batteries once or twice a year -- funded from tobacco taxes? ...
