Q: We are getting ready to move furniture to the front porch for the first time - we bought the house last fall. I have a couple of questions: What color should we paint the ceiling? It's white now, but aren't all porch ceilings supposed to be blue? Also, what's the best furniture to use? We have old wicker, the real thing, but have been thinking about some of the new plastic wickers. What do ... [full story]

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Researchers at Oregon State University have made an important fundamental discovery about how different components of plant cells communicate with each other to allow for proper cell and life functions. The findings, just published in the journal Science, identify a gene involved in plant stress responses that also has a duel role in communication between the chloroplast and nucleus of cells. The correct function of this process is integral to plant function ... [full story]

Q: My husband and I have been happily married 37 years, and he plans to retire next year. I believe he visualizes a retirement life of more golfing days and fishing trips with his buddies while I continue my ... [full story]

There were great prizefighters before, such as John L. Sullivan and Jack Dempsey, and after, such as Mohammad Ali, but none quite commanded the respect and affection of the American public as Joe Louis, who reigned as heavyweight champion for almost 12 years, from 1937 to 1949, defending his title 25 times. Known universally (and politically incorrectly) as The Brown Bomber, his fame crossed color lines to make him an outstanding national hero, appreciated for ... [full story]

The Saab 9-3 SportCombi is a well-built European import that is inspiring to drive and treads lightly on the planet and your bank account. Its only fault is that it may leave too small of a footprint for a big family.   SAAB 9-3 SPORTCOMBI - The Saab 9-3 SportCombi has no rooftop luggage rails to betray the design. And the driving experience is light and lithe, anything but the perception of a wagon. CNS Photo ... [full story]

EUGENE, Ore. - University of Oregon researchers studying mosquitoes have produced the first chromosomal map that shows regions of chromosomes that activate – and are apparently evolving – in animals in response to climate change. The map will allow researchers to narrow their focus to identify specific genes that control the seasonal development of animals.
