My eldest daughter Mary Beth and her husband Larry had a cat named Barney, who had a dark and resentful personality.  Larry loved Barney and allowed him free roam of their upscale Santa Barbara, California, home.  Mary Beth did not love Barney and restricted his movement.  Thus Mary Beth and Barney labored through 17 years of tempered hostility. Shortly after his 17th birthday Barney became ill.  Stoically he went to a dark corner of the ... [full story]

The rejuvenation of Jackie Robinson's spirit on the 60th anniversary of breaking the color barrier in baseball sadly shortchanged an important aspect of his achievement. What Robinson accomplished wasn't so much a baseball feat as it was a crucial civil rights breakthrough for all Americans. He was a great baseball player, yet none of his accomplishments on the diamond can compare with what he did for society. Robinson showed us in definitive terms that blacks ... [full story]

The redesigned Mitsubishi Lancer is more than an evolutionary sedan, but it is an Evolution. When Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler parted ways toward the end of 2005, this platform was under development by Mitsubishi for the new Lancer and a few Chrysler vehicles, such as the Jeep Compass and Dodge Caliber.   MITSUBISHI LANCER - There's a lot to the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer that most drivers won't see, but they will feel. The old saying "It pays to do business with an experienced firm" can be good advice for travelers today looking for hotels. Celebrating its 100th birthday this week, the 591-room Fairmont Hotel atop San Francisco's Nob Hill actually sparkled. A wide, crimson carpet crawled from the car park into the lobby. Banquettes, sofas and chairs looked newly upholstered. A smiling staffer gave me directions. Women in brocaded, trailing evening gowns, a lone peacock feather sticking ... [full story]

Game: "Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2" Publisher: Ubisoft System: Microsoft Xbox 360 Cost: $60 ESRB rating: T Review rating: 3 1/2 stars About a year ago, Xbox 360 owners were wowed by Ubisoft's stellar military action game "Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter," better known as "GRAW." "Kalooki Nights" by Howard Jacobson; Simon & Schuster; 450 pages; $26. Comparisons in this case being inevitable, let's get them out of the way: Yes, there are striking similarities between Jacobson's "Kalooki Nights" and Philip Roth's "Portnoy's Complaint" of 40 (!) years ago. Narration by sensitive, artistic Jewish boy growing up in the 1950s who, as an adult, finds himself attracted to non-Jewish women. The comedy is broad, the implications deep .... Q: I inherited the mixing bowls and drip coffeepot seen in this photo from my 95-year-old uncle. Marked in gold on the bottom of each piece are the words "Hall's Superior Quality Kitchenware - Made in the U.S.A." In the 1930s and early 1940s, he was a feed salesman and later a coffee salesman. His daughter thinks they were bonus rewards for sales. I am 71 years old and can remember seeing them at his ... [full story]

When Matthew Broderick hacked into his high school's computer system in "WarGames" and changed Ally Sheedy's biology grade, it was downright thrilling: There was Broderick, hunched over the keyboard, Sheedy peering over his shoulder. Close-up on the keys! All that mysterious tap-tap-tapping! On his screen, a blinking cursor moved to the D; a tap of a key, and it became a B.   'PERFECT STRANGER' - Halle Berry plays a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse with suspected ... [full story]

We had our 8-year-old grandson Wyatt over for the weekend recently. It was a blast. He had fun and we did too. In advance, though, we worried that he would get lonely for his parents or his friends and want to go home right away. In the end, we didn't have to worry. He was happy to be an only child for a few days, away from his "annoying" little sister and his big brothers. ... [full story]
