WASHINGTON - A new NASA study has found that in 2005 the Arctic replaced very little of the thick sea ice it normally loses and replenishes each year. Replenishment of this thick, perennial sea ice each year is essential to the maintenance and stability of the Arctic summer ice cover. The findings complement a NASA study released in fall 2006 that found a 14-percent drop in this perennial ice between 2004 and 2005. The lack ... [full story]

ABOARD THE RENEGADE - At around 10:30 p.m. on a sultry summer night, we chugged away from Seaforth Sportfishing in San Diego, pumped with the prospect of catching fish - big fish - lots of them.   VICTORY AT SEA - Heading back to San Diego, fishermen hang out at the stern of the boat, rehashing and savoring the day's glories. CNS Photo by John Gibbons.    FRESH FROM THE SEA - Crew members will filet the fish ... [full story]

Eating apples may do more than keep the doctor away. A study published in Thorax Online states that mothers who eat apples during pregnancy might reduce the chances of their children developing asthma later in life. In the study, researchers from the Netherlands and Scotland followed the food intake of approximately 2,000 pregnant women. The researchers then looked at the children's airway development five years later. They found a lower risk of childhood asthma in ... [full story]

One day dentists may be an important part in the fight against breast cancer. According to the article "Salivary analysis on the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer," dentists could one day use salivary tests to detect breast cancer. Dentists Sebastian Z. Paige and Charles F. Streckfus wrote about this development in the April/May 2007 issue of General Dentistry. Paige and Streckfus found that saliva protein levels could help in the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up ... [full story]

CHICAGO - When the game's most critical moment arrived for Jason Michaels on Wednesday afternoon, he wasn't afraid of losing. He wasn't afraid of slamming into the wall. He was, however, afraid at just what joy-crazed Grady Sizemore might do when he arrived on the scene. "My heart was stopped for a second, then I just started screaming," Sizemore said after Michaels' basket catch just before hitting the left-field fence preserved Cleveland's 8-7 victory over Chicago. "I ... [full story]

CLEVELAND - Beer, brats and baseball - it sure beats blizzards. Major League Baseball took "road trip" to a new level Monday evening when the Indians boarded a flight to Milwaukee ... for Cleveland's official home opener ... against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. We're not making this up. And, hey, the "Cleveland Indians of Milwaukee" does have a nice ring. More than 8 inches of snow sat atop the Jacobs Field outfield Monday ... [full story]

SAN DIEGO - Blackwater USA, a private security firm with hundreds of millions of dollars in government work in Iraq, has polarized the backcountry community of Potrero with a proposal to train its forces on a former chicken and cattle ranch. The North Carolina-based company, which uses muscular, heavily armed military men to recruit on its Web site, is on the fast track with the county to develop a training center on 824 acres about ... Q: This is a close-up of my Disney rug. It is decorated with the images of Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse and Pluto dancing to music with a boat and the sea in the background. The rug measures 40 inches by 22 inches, not including the 2-inch fringe on the ends. It is in mint condition. There are no markings on the front or back to identify it as a Disney product. My grandfather acquired it ... [full story]

Q: I inherited the mixing bowls and drip coffeepot seen in this photo from my 95-year-old uncle. Marked in gold on the bottom of each piece are the words "Hall's Superior Quality Kitchenware - Made in the U.S.A." In the 1930s and early 1940s, he was a feed salesman and later a coffee salesman. His daughter thinks they were bonus rewards for sales. I am 71 years old and can remember seeing them at his ... [full story]

Q: Enclosed is a photo of a matching washbowl and pitcher I purchased in an antiques shop in the early 1960s. On the bottom of each piece are the words "Eastern Flower - Wedgwood - Etruria - England." I thought the flowers against the deep orange background were unusual for Wedgwood and wonder if there is any value to my wash set. I would love any information you can give me. A: Josiah Wedgwood founded ... [full story]
