There was something uncommonly good about the so-called extras on the DVD for the wonderful movie "The Kite Runner" (DreamWorks, 3 1/2 stars). There are only two, "Words of Kite Runner" and "Images of Kite Runner," but they are composed unusually well and rich with insightful commentary.   'THE KITE RUNNER' - Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada and Zekiria Ebrahimi star in the gripping drama 'The Kite Runner.' Q: We are moving into what we hope will eventually be our retirement home. So we're planning a few remodeling projects to make the house more comfortable. First on the list is the master bath: we're tall people (my husband is 6-foot-5 and I am 5-foot-11) and the fixtures we now have are   TALL ORDER INDEED - This master bath has been remodeled and resized, the better to fit the homeowners themselves. The bad news continues to mount: the stock market has dipped below 12,000, the lowest in several years; the employment picture is dismal for the third month in a row; unemployment has risen, not including those who, discouraged by several months of fruitless trying, aren't even applying for a new job. Older people on a fixed income may be hardest hit. So are those who depend on regular income from savings and investments. A friend ... [full story]

Who among us hasn't reveled in the guilty pleasure of digging into a generous helping of macaroni and cheese? We're talking about the real, homemade kind where the pasta is bathed in a rich, custardy sauce loaded with robust cheddar and crowned with a crusty golden topping.   MAC APPLICATIONS - Cookbook authors and chefs keep trying to improve on the classic macaroni and cheese. CNS Photo by K.C. Alfred.    SAY CHEESE - A tasting panel sampled ... [full story]

In 1922, the comic strip "Fritzi Ritz," created by Larry Whittington, made its debut, starring a typically pretty and stylish Jazz Age flapper. But it only took a few years - after the strip was taken over by Ernie Bushmiller - for Fritzi's 8-year-old niece Nancy, whose most distinguishing feature was black hair that looked like it had been cut with pinking shears, to take over the starring role, establishing a supporting cast of characters ... It has always been a bit curious the way most employers treat part-time workers like second-class citizens. Part-time positions rarely pay well and most are at or just above the minimum wage. Even in jobs where full-time and part-time workers perform the same tasks, full-time workers are often paid more. Fifteen years ago, I spoke to a chief executive about his part-time workers. The head of this retail chain explained that he needed part-time workers ... [full story]

It seems that when the economy is sputtering like it is today, more people complain about their jobs. It's a pretty common affliction which is probably more representative of generational restlessness and employer attitudes than it is about soured jobs. Still, at times like this many workers feel like trapped animals, backed into a corner and looking for any way out. A bad economy captures everyone's attention. Managers pay closer attention to costs and productivity. ... [full story]

Spunky Southwest Airlines, the 37-year-old peanut-pushing carrier built on cheap fares and the public relations savvy of bourbon-swigging, chain-smoking former Chief Executive Officer Herb Kelleher, has its first public black eye. Southwest is in a major squabble with the Federal Aviation Administration over the airworthiness of its airplanes after cracks were discovered in aircraft fuselages a year ago. The airline grounded 41 planes on March 12 after admitting it missed required inspections of the aircraft, ... [full story]
