Did you hear about the tarot whiz who got hit by a truck? She didn’t see it coming.   Ha! Tarot card readers can be fun, especially when they’re your wife and you can tease them in print. Yahaira, my little gypsy, has researched tarot, taken the quizzes, even spoken to a profoundly obese woman who speaks with the dead (a large medium). There was, of course, a learning curve in Yahaira’s early readings: “You will ... [full story]

Fortunately, the main factors affecting posture and ergonomics are completely within one's ability to control and ... [full story]

Jacques Martin Barzun may have said it best, "Whoever wants to know the heart and mind of America had better learn baseball." Both are embodied in the 2006 Bend Elks. The collegiate team’s season opener is Friday, June 9 and it is baseball at it’s purest. Everyone on this team is playing for the sheer love of the game, not to collect a paycheck, according to the man behind the team, Jim Richards. Seven years ago it ... [full story]

Healthy By Choice, Not by Chance “The truth is that people are eating ten dollars worth of food that is only giving them ten cents worth of nutrition” - Dr Scott Hannen Are you a “carboholic”?  Foods can be broken down into three main categories; Proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Dear Jim: I want to use filtered water to remove chlorine when bathing and showering. Installing a whole-house filtering system is expensive and seems wasteful. Is there any way to filter just the bath water? - Jerome H. Dear Jerome: When people think about filtering and purifying the water in their homes, they usually think about water used for drinking and cooking. Actually, the exposure to chemicals in water is also significant when hot water ... [full story]

Q: I belong to a homeowners' association. The association, representing 18 owners, was formed about 20 years ago. The developer turned the association over to the owners about 16 years ago. The Articles of Incorporation and Covenants for the association state that the "Developer shall not be obligated for assessments on Lots owned by the Developer." The developer is long gone but his son is a homeowner here and was a partner with his father ... [full story]

Car without headlights on could have contributed to the crash.  At approximately 9:30 P.M. on Tuesday, June 6th, Oregon State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 26 at the intersection of Fir Lane, which is five miles west of Madras. It's a shame that Vince Vaughn went to such great lengths to gain 50 pounds in order to portray the character of Gary.  Redundant, really.  The script of the "The Break-Up" is so ponderous, no one needed to add so much as a feather to this elephantine creation.  Go on a diet, Vince, but first things first:  Lose this flick.  "The Break-Up" is billed as a comedy.  Wrong.  Comedies about couples inflicting punishment upon each ... They sweep on the scene in heavily armored vehicles; an unassailable swarm of officers emerge clad in camouflage, helmets, facemasks, armor shields and weapons.  They all move as one with stealth precision.   What sounds like a scene straight from a primetime police drama is reality and happening right here on the streets of Bend.   Everyday police officers, fire emergency medical service personnel and an emergency room physician, all specially trained, are on standby and ready ...
