CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. - A marathon pretrial hearing began Wednesday for the commander whose Marines are accused of committing the worst atrocity of the Iraq war. Lt. Col. His hearing at Camp Pendleton is expected to last at least nine days and include dozens of witnesses. Chessani is the highest-ranking of four ... [full story]

Q: After nearly three years of widowhood and attending our senior center community activities, church and other social outings, I still have not been able to find a new partner. Two of my friends have said I've been trying too hard and if I relaxed maybe the right man would come along. I am healthy and can take care of my own finances. I need your suggestions as to what to do next. A: It ... [full story]

Many, if not most, people who drive by or enter their local Pep Boys shop have little idea of its long and interesting history, both as a business and as an advertising vehicle, although the familiar caricatures of Manny, Moe and Jack - the actual originators of the firm - live on in the collective imagination. Actually, it should have been Manny, Moe, Moe and Jack, to truly represent the founders. The story begins in ... [full story]

If modern life is a series of trade-offs, American workers seem to be swapping their well-being for the "busyness" of their lives. That is demonstrated in two findings from a recent survey by Yahoo! HotJobs that reports 45 percent of workers left unused vacation days on the table in 2006 and 36 percent say today they have too much work to take a vacation. Too much work to take a vacation? Something has gone terribly ... [full story]

LOS ANGELES - Former first lady Nancy Reagan said she published her late husband's diaries so readers could learn more about the former U.S. president. "The Reagan Diaries," edited by historian Douglas Brinkley, are being published three years after Ronald Reagan's death, CNN reported Friday. "I just thought that there was so much in this diary that people didn't know about Ronnie, and that they really should know about Ronnie," she told CNN's "Larry King ... [full story]

The future appears bright for those 2007 graduates entering the working world. MRINetwork, an international recruitment organization, shows the job market for college graduates as being in the best shape it has been in since the 1990s. After hitting a low point in 2003, the job market has advanced for graduates during the last four years. The Economic Policy Institute shows that the employment rate has increased to 86 percent after dropping to 84 percent ... [full story]

Long before he jumped into the travel bag business, Jim Markel packed parachutes during his four-year tour in the Marines. Rigging 'chutes wasn't going to be a career, but it had a powerful impact on his mind. "The rigger's motto," he says, "is 'I will be sure - always.' It's a matter of life and death." Markel has carried that mentality into a business with his dad, Jim Sr., called Red Oxx Manufacturing. They started ... [full story]

Early to bed and early to rise gets Jack and Jill to the two-car-per-green on-ramp every morning. Accelerate, merge, get in the flow and hope nobody screws up or everybody will be late for work. Most days it seems a miracle when traffic flows. And on the days it doesn't, there is reassurance in driving a big Volvo.   VOLVO S80 - The S80 is the largest Volvo sedan and re-engineered this year, with a new ... [full story]

ROSWELL, N.M. - An umbrella of secrecy is surrounding plans for a UFO theme park in the New Mexico town of Roswell. City Planner Zach Montgomery revealed six locations were being considered for the park but refused to pinpoint the locales, The Roswell Daily Record reported Friday. "That has to remain confidential," Montgomery said, adding the locations' values would quadruple overnight if revealed. The only information available was that the possible locations were either within ... [full story]
