A 27-year-old LaPine man has been arrested for fatally-striking a pedestrian with his vehicle and fleeing the scene. Josh Day has been charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide and failure to perform duties of a driver involved in an accident, according to Sgt. BEND CITY POLICE BLOTTER During the week, there were 5 reports of vehicle break-ins, with an estimated $4,080 in items stolen. Of the 5 break-ins, 4 were from unlocked vehicles. 78 Years Old, Still Climbing Climbing a mountain in the Cascades, most would not expect to be side-by-side with an 80-year-old man.  However, if Robert Speik gets his birthday wish, someone will do just that. In U.S. District Court in Eugene, Kevin Tubbs, 37, Kendall Tankersley, 29, and Darren Todd Thurston, 36, entered guilty pleas on July 20th to criminal conspiracy and related arson charges that occurred from 1996 through 2001 in Oregon and four other Western states. The Deschutes County Health Department reported a local resident has tested positive for the measles. The person is no longer infectious and there is no way of knowing who may have been exposed to her/him and at what time or day. Campaign Continues Momentum with Statewide Grassroots Efforts State Senator Ben Westlund (I), Independent candidate for Governor has announced that the campaign has gathered 18,390 signatures. The Oregon Arts Commission has announced $655,500 in grants to 102 Oregon arts organizations awarded through its Arts Services and Arts Learning Grant programs.  Among the recipients was Arts Central in Bend.  The non-profit organization received $17,000.
