Q: I love decorating my home but am buffaloed when it comes to doing our windows. My mother put cafe curtains everywhere and let it go at that, but I'd like something "dressier," at least, in the living and dining room as well as the master bedroom. I went to a window store, but there were so many new shades and things that I came home more undecided than ever. Can you help?   WINDOW TO ... [full story]

Q: Both my husband and I will retire in about five months. We have been encouraged by our children and grandchildren, who do not live near us, to learn how to use the computer. We talk about doing so, but have not. My husband seems to be more willing, but I am resisting because I am afraid of it. Does it really make any sense to spend the money and time to learn to do ... Comic book superheroine Mary Marvel was one of the few of her gender to break the glass ceiling of her day, and did it before she was out of her teens. This happened in 1942, a propitious moment, at the onset of America's entrance into World War II, when women were being empowered, taking on factory jobs and playing professional sports - becoming wonder women in real life. And Mary Marvel was among the first ... [full story]

If I ever get the point where I believe my job was a dead end - that I could do nothing to succeed no matter how hard I tried - I would quit. I would go find another job or figure out a way to create my own business or career opportunity. Women apparently feel the same way. Every year, you read about the swelling ranks of female entrepreneurs and women who take jobs as ... [full story]

It is as easy as a click of a button to send online resumes to multiple employers; however, this technology can have its disadvantages. Job seekers send out as many resumes as possible in hope of getting a response. MRINetwork, a recruitment organization, found that often there is little connection between the job's requirements and the candidate's qualifications. Michael Jalbert, president of MRINetwork, compares today's online boards to the time when job boards were nonexistent. ... [full story]

KABUL, Afghanistan - Mark McCord of Cleveland, Tenn., has a gift for understatement. He claims he doesn't feel unsafe working or traveling in and out of this chaotic capital city of 3 million people that's not served by U.S. airlines or hotels and is a political hot spot. McCord, who works and lives in a guarded compound in the center of Kabul, is forbidden to hail a cab and he'd never get behind the wheel ... [full story]

I was evaluating a Lincoln MKZ when J.D. Power and Associates released its 2007 Initial Quality Study. In it 14 Ford Motor Co. models placed in the top three of their segments, which a survey spokesman called "an achievement unmatched by any other corporation this year" and a testament to the improvement in quality for Ford Motor Co. vehicles and plants.   LINCOLN MKZ - The Lincoln MKZ sedan, previously called the Zephyr, debuted this year ... When was the last time you stood to applaud a performance, whether at a concert or at the theater? More to the point, when was the last time you didn't stand to applaud a performance?   TAKING A STAND - Somebody's got to stand up and say enough is enough when it comes to all this standing up. CNS Photo by Jim Baird. So commonplace is the standing ovation these days that to many, the gesture has ... [full story]

Q: Enclosed is a photo of a secretary that I have inherited. It originally belonged to my grandfather. No one in our family has been able to furnish any information as to the age of our secretary. Everyone just says, "He always had it." He died at the age of 80 in 1947 and then it was passed down to my mother. Inside the drop front part are various size cubbyholes. Behind the lower door ... My beloved wife, Kate, has gone from 0 to 70 in what seems like breakneck speed. Before you can say AARP, she will be 70 years old, a bona fide septuagenarian. But I didn't want her to crawl into senior citizenry. I wanted her to arrive at that Golden Year milestone with a little oomph. So, I gave her a birthday present two years ago- a red Mercedes-Benz 320 SLK hardtop convertible, which matches her ... [full story]
