CENTRAL Zone Viewing Woodpeckers This summer, visitors and residents in Deschutes County have an opportunity to view some of the state’s most sought after woodpeckers. Shevlin Park near Bend also provides a good opportunity to view the species.  White-headed woodpeckers along with olive-sided flycatchers and several species of warblers are regularly seen at Cold ... You know there are people who obsess about writing the great American novel. Not me. I don't dream of writing the great American screenplay, nor the great American pop song, nor the great American spam e-mail. These are all worthy goals, but for working people, like thee and me, there can only be one literary goal that shines like a beacon in the dark and stormy night. We want to write the great American office ... [full story]

The arrest of 14 illegal immigrants for their alleged ties to two notorious gangs might provide interesting insights into how those groups operate. But the arrests should not strengthen stereotypes that paint immigrants as law-breaking desperados who came to the United States to expand their criminal activities. Young male immigrants, including those who arrived in this country without proper documentation, are five times less likely to land in prison than their native-born counterparts, according to ... With growing, well-justified concerns about how good a job it's doing monitoring the safety of our food and medications, the Food and Drug Administration is handing out more than $8 million in employee bonuses, roughly triple what it spent five years ago, according to The Associated Press. But while that may sound like another federal boondoggle, it makes sense. Officials say the bonuses, worth $5,000 or more per employee, are intended to keep experienced employees ... [full story]
