Q: We're in our early 50s. Neither of us will receive a pension. We've been married only 10 years. We both have been contributing to our 401(k) retirement plans for only 10 years, so we probably have a total of only $60,000 together.  We live in a nice 12-year-old home on a nice street in an older suburb of Detroit. Our home has probably not appreciated in value at all in the five years we've lived ... [full story]

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich re-inserts himself into the political debate If you thought that a global conflagration on the order of a world war was more the stuff of Biblical prophecy, science fiction and apocalyptic end-of- times novels, think again. For years, U.S. neoconservatives have been ratcheting up the rhetoric -- mostly in small gatherings and on partisan Web sites -- claiming that terrorist activities around the world constituted the initial stages of a ... The melodic chirping of our feathered friends has been silenced by the roaring buzz of area chainsaws. Thankfully, City Councilor John Hummel has proposed that a tree ordinance be placed on the city books. A municipal tree ordinance is long overdue in Bend. Developers and homeowners alike have had too much leeway in hacking away our most treasured trees. With no regulations currently in place, it’s time for The Bend City Council to take clear ...
