A tip of possible animal abuse and neglect made to the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office led to the arrest of a Bend man Wednesday, and 36 sheep and goats were removed from the property on Erickson Road, said authorities.   Daniel B. The City’s new Bend Area Transit (BAT) service got off to a good start on Wednesday, September 27.  Bus drivers counted 986 riders. The ridership count was probably higher, due to missed counts during some busy bus driver shifts. Riders rode free yesterday and will continue to do so during BAT’s inaugural week of service (through October 3).What the counted rides mean is that for every vehicle hour the buses transported 81.9 riders per hour ... Oregon State University scientists will help burn about 40 acres Friday or Saturday on the Prineville District of the Bureau of Land Management, four miles northwest of Mitchell. The scientists and federal land management fire specialists plan to use the burn to study the effectiveness of controlled burning to reduce the dominance of western juniper in mountain sagebrush steppe communities. Delegates from Condega, Nicaragua will be visiting the City of Bend and touring Central Oregon next week. A Bend man performing mechanical repairs on a motorhome he used as a full-time residence suffered minor injuries, but his recreational vehicle and its contents were completely destroyed by a fire that ignited as he was working on the vehicle’s fuel pump. Vandals damaged at least six vehicles with large lava rocks in northeast Bend Monday night through Tuesday morning, the latest reported incidents in a string of similar criminal mischief that occurred over the past week, authorities said.  Officers of the Bend Police Department responded to six reported incidents beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, and expect additional victims to come forward in coming days. Chief Andy Jordan of the Bend Police Department recently announced the acquisition of a 2006 Polaris Ranger 6x6 vehicle. A woman and her 9-year-old son returned to their northwest Bend home Monday afternoon to find the front door open, their property stacked in the foyer, and two burglars inside. School Improvement Wednesdays kicked-off this week with early release for all Bend-La Pine Schools elementary and middle school students.
