Rock-throwing vandals plaguing the Bend area over the last two weeks have struck again, this time in southwest Bend and the Old Mill District, causing an estimated $15,000 in damages, said authorities. The vandalism occurred from about 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday, September 29 and 30 and targeted numerous vehicles, office windows, and glass doors of businesses. Lt. Three California men were killed in a fatal head-on traffic crash that occurred Friday morning on Highway 97 about 17 miles south of Bend, and fatigue may have been a contributing factor, said authorities. Two bucks stood very still in a small clearing of the ponderosa pine forest. The hunter raised his rifle, taking aim at the larger of the two deer and squeezed the trigger. At only 50 yards, it should have been an easy shot but neither deer flinched. After two more shots, his partner also fired twice with the same result. Oregon State University scientists will help burn about 40 acres Friday or Saturday on the Prineville District of the Bureau of Land Management, four miles northwest of Mitchell. Delegates from Condega, Nicaragua will be visiting the City of Bend and touring Central Oregon next week. The City’s new Bend Area Transit (BAT) service got off to a good start on Wednesday, September 27.  Bus drivers counted 986 riders. The ridership count was probably higher, due to missed counts during some busy bus driver shifts. Riders rode free yesterday and will continue to do so during BAT’s inaugural week of service (through October 3).What the counted rides mean is that for every vehicle hour the buses transported 81.9 riders per hour ... A billboard contractor changing a sign along Wilson Avenue started a fast moving brushfire which threatened an apartment complex Thursday when his ladder touched an overhead power line, authorities said. A Bend man performing mechanical repairs on a motorhome he used as a full-time residence suffered minor injuries, but his recreational vehicle and its contents were completely destroyed by a fire that ignited as he was working on the vehicle’s fuel pump. Vandals damaged at least six vehicles with large lava rocks in northeast Bend Monday night through Tuesday morning, the latest reported incidents in a string of similar criminal mischief that occurred over the past week, authorities said.  Officers of the Bend Police Department responded to six reported incidents beginning at 9 p.m. Monday, and expect additional victims to come forward in coming days.
