BEND, Ore. -- The Second Sunday reading event, hosted by Bend Public Library, will feature two of the winners of the 2007 Rising Star Creative Writing Competition sponsored by The Nature of Words.
One of the featured writers will be Theresa Peoples, who won both the poetry and the literary nonfiction in the 15-18 year-old category in 2007. She currently attends the International School of the Cascades in Redmond, Ore. Also reading will be Michele DeSilva, who won for poetry in the 19-25 age group. Michele works at the Central Oregon Community College Library and is pursuing her Masters of Library and Information Sciences through the University of Washington
Both of these young women will read selections of their works on Sunday, April 13 from 3:00 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in the Brooks Room at the Bend Public Library. The event is free to the public.
Submissions are currently being accepted for the fourth annual Rising Star Creative Writing Competition, which is part of The Nature of Words, Central Oregon’s premier literary event. Winners of the 2008 competition will be announced as part of the festival, scheduled for November 5-9, 2008 in Bend. Prizes will be awarded in fiction, literary nonfiction and poetry in two age categories, 15-18 and 19-25. The top winner in each category will receive $100, recognition at the awards ceremony, and a scholarship to one of The Nature of Words workshops in their winning genre.
The Nature of Words is co-sponsored by Oregon State University-Cascades Campus, Central Oregon Community College and the Writing Ranch.
