It’s a little known secret, but the blanket of the black-eyed Susans draped over the shoulder of the winning horse in the Preakness Stakes is actually made of Viking daisies. While the black-eyed Susan is the state flower of Maryland, where the race is run at Pimlico Race Track in Baltimore, black-eyed Susans don’t bloom until June. Instead, the 18-inch-by-90-inch blanket is made of daisies with a black spot lacquered in the middle, a deception that has gone on every third Saturday in May since 1940.
