LOS ANGELES -- A California sheriff once seen as a rising star in Republican politics has been indicted on federal charges he misused his office for financial gain.
Orange County, Calif., Sheriff Mike Carona was mentioned as a possible lieutenant governor candidate on a slate with Arnold Schwarzenegger. But as his star rose in politics, Carona was attacked by critics who accused him of improper management, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.
George Jaramillo, Carona's former assistant and longtime friend, has agreed to testify against Carano, the Times reported. Jaramillo is serving a one-year sentence for collecting cash and gifts worth $45,000 and for filing had false income tax returns.
Carona wasn't available for comment, the newspaper said.
