Airports fail bomb parts test

WASHINGTON -- Covert tests conducted at 19 U.S. airports show it was possible to smuggle bomb components onto aircraft without being detected, it was reported Wednesday.

CBS News said a Government Accountability Office report shows investigators passed through TSA checkpoints with parts that could be used to make improvised explosive and incendiary devices.

"Our tests clearly demonstrate that a terrorist group, using publicly available information and a few resources, could cause severe damage to an airplane and threaten the safety of passengers," the report states.

The federal investigators said terrorists could cause "severe damage" with devices "created by combining commonly available products" that can be purchased over the Internet and from local stores for about $150, CBS reported.
