SOFIA, Bulgaria - Bulgarian police said they stopped a taxi in Sofia Friday and found a 19-year-old man transporting 75 pounds of heroin in two suitcases.

Investigators found the heroin in the cab's trunk, the Sofia News Agency reported. Police said the heroin, whose price on the black market was estimated at about $2 million, was supposed to be distributed in Western Europe.

Since becoming member of the European Union in January, Bulgaria has tightened border controls as well as imposed special police checks across the country to contain drug trafficking from Asia.

Some 2,120 pounds of heroin have been confiscated in Bulgaria in the first 10 month this year, Kiril Georgiev, head of the police organized crime department, told reporters Friday.

Bulgaria is on a major Balkan route of drug trafficking from Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey to Western European countries, the Bulgarian Focus news agency said.
