Black Crater Fire Area Road Closures Scheduled Next Week

Deschutes National Forest visitors might be affected by road closures Monday and Tuesday when contractors replace two culverts where the Black Crater Fire burned 9,400 acres west of Sisters in July.

Forest Service engineers will close Forest Road 1024 and access to the Millican Crater Trailhead on Monday and reopen it on Tuesday.  No detour is available for this closure.

On Tuesday, the engineers will close Forest Road 1018 about 3.6 miles south of where it leaves State Highway 242 and then reopen it on Wednesday.

Motorists can access the Whispering Pine Horse Camp by driving west from Sisters about a mile and a half to Forest Road 15.  They should then head south for several miles, then east on Forest Road 1520 to the recreation site.

Detour signs will be posted at State Highway 242, and the intersection of Forest Roads 1018 and 1024.

A Burned Area Emergency Response, or BAER, team planned the work because existing culverts will be inadequate when fall precipitation arrives.  Other road treatments will include installing water bars or trenches to decrease surface run-off on roads.
