MEMPHIS -- A 10-year-old suburban Memphis boy has been charged with trying to poison his teacher's coffee with dry erase board liquid cleaner.

The incident happened Friday at Mount Pisgah Middle School where other students confirmed seeing the unidentified boy spritz two shots of the fluid into the teacher's coffee mug, WREG-TV, Memphis, reported Tuesday.

The teacher took one sip and noticed a funny taste, and police were called. The youth made an appearance in Juvenile Court Monday on charges of attempted poisoning.

School district spokesman Mike Tebbe said their investigation indicates it was a simple prank. The boy has no record of school problems or a juvenile law record.

In a letter sent home to parents, school Principal John Gilmer explained the incident and staff response, and said there was a possibility of a long-term suspension for the student, the report said.
