HILLSBORO, Iowa -- A house in Hillsboro, Iowa, was knocked 30 feet off its foundation after a grain bin collapsed and sent a massive wave of corn at the home.
Curtis Giberson, who lived next to the devastated home, said the grain bin just seemed to fall apart before its contents flooded Jennifer and Jesse Kellett's home Monday, The Burlington (Iowa) Hawk Eye reported Wednesday.
"The sides of the bin just went out," Giberson said. "It sounded like a Gatling gun, pop, pop, pop, pop -- real loud."
The onslaught of corn temporarily knocked out the home's electricity and trapped Jesse Kellett inside the house with his 11-year-old son, Jordan. They got out eventually, and Jesse Kellett underwent surgery for injuries to his feet, his wife said.
Volunteer firefighter Robert Anderson Jr. credited neighbors and their heavy farm equipment with rescuing the trapped family members.
"If it wasn't for them (the farmers) we would have never gotten this done," Anderson told the Hawk Eye.
