WASHINGTON -- Internet credit card contributions may be eligible for matching funds under the presidential public funding program, the U.S. elections watchdog said.

The Federal Election Commission unanimously approved an advisory opinion in response to a request by the Chris Dodd for President campaign committee, the commission said in a news release. Sen. Dodd is a Connecticut Democrat.

The FEC said contributions made over the Internet that were subject to a specific verification procedure are eligible for the federal matching funds.

The commission also unanimously approved an advisory opinion regarding the possible campaign of Jim Hurysz, a potential Independent candidate in a Virginia congressional race. The FEC concluded Hurysz could accept specified volunteer services from Canadian citizens and use campaign funds for travel to Canada under certain circumstances.

The commission also ruled he could use personal funds to travel to Canada to observe third-party candidate operations and other specific reasons. However, he cannot accept campaign materials provided free by Canadian third-party candidates.
