DES MOINES, Iowa -- Former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich is in Iowa this week to help promote his Platform for America campaign.

While some political observers have tabbed Gingrich's Iowa visit as an attempt to garner the Republican vice presidential nomination, the former House speaker recently said his political platform was his key motivation, The Washington Times reported Wednesday.

"This is not about being a candidate," Gingrich said Tuesday. "It's about the issues in the proposed platform, including English as the official language of government."

Among the other key issues included in Gingrich's Platform for America are a proposed death penalty for terrorist actions in the United States and the performance of silent prayers in U.S. schools.

While Gingrich has apparently given up any hopes of a run for the Republican presidential nomination, the politician recently said he would not rule out accepting a vice presidential bid.

"Depending on the circumstances, I'd be honored to be considered and under some circumstances, I'd probably feel compelled to say 'yes,'" he told the Times.
