NEW YORK -- The corpse of an elderly woman was found this week inside her New York home, apparently two years after she died from heart disease.
While relatives and neighbors of Christina Copeman contacted local authorities after the 70-year-old disappeared in late 2006, their concerns were not forwarded to the proper city program, The New York Post reported Wednesday.
New York has a program in place that sends social workers to a missing individual's home, but concerned family members were never connected to the supervising agency.
Copeman's nephew, Peter Bishop, said that at first he questioned where his aunt may have gone, but last Saturday his concern finally prompted him to officially report her missing.
"I thought she could be dead, that she had gone on a trip or she could be in a mental hospital," he said. "She once was hospitalized after she ran down the street in her nightgown."
The Post said that police were immediately dispatched to Copeman's home, where they broke down the door and found her skeletal remains inside.
