LIMA -- Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori lashed out Monday during the first day of his trial on alleged human rights violations, proclaiming his innocence.
Fujimori, who was accused of using death squads to kill political opponents, screamed out during the trial: "I am innocent," El Comercio reported online.
Fujimori, who ran Peru from 1990 to 2000, fled the country in 2001 and remained in Japan until attempting to return to Peru this year. Fujimori was detained in Chile and remained in custody there until being sent to Peru to face trial for the deaths of 25 people in the early 1990s.
