Volley of rockets hits Israel from Gaza

SDEROT, Israel -- At least 18 rockets fired by Palestinian militants rained down Wednesday on the western Israeli city of Sderot from Gaza, Israeli media reported.

The majority of the shells landed in open areas and caused little damage, although five people were treated for minor injuries, the Haaretz newspaper reported.

The Islamic Jihad militant group took responsibility for firing 11 of the rockets while the Popular Resistance Committee also claimed responsibility, Ynetnews.com reported.

The barrage was reportedly in response to Tuesday's Israeli military strike into Gaza in which six Palestinians were killed and more than 40 others arrested, the reports said.

Tuesday night, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said he was convening the Security Cabinet on Wednesday to discuss measures to curb the rocket attacks on the southwestern part of the country, Haaretz said.

Two months ago, the Cabinet announced a series of sanctions on Gaza, including reductions of electricity and fuel but Israeli courts struck most of them down.
