SDEROT, Israel -- The mayor of a southwestern Israeli town hit by a barrage of rockets Wednesday announced his resignation out of frustration.
Hours after Palestinian fighters in Gaza fired at least 18 rockets into and around Sderot, Eli Moyal told Israel Radio he was stepping down, the Jerusalem Post reported.
"This role is too big for any one person," he said. "I do not want to stay in office until the day 20 children die in Sderot."
Many of the rockets fired Wednesday fell into open areas but one landed on a sidewalk along the main street, injuring at least three people, the report said.
Sderot has experienced near-daily rocket attacks from Gaza for seven years.
In Jerusalem, the country's high court was to hear a petition by Sderot residents demanding federal money to reinforce their homes or remunerate those who have done it at their own expense, the Post said.
Palestinian media reported Wednesday's barrage was in response to a raid Tuesday by Israeli troops that killed six Palestinians.
