DES MOINES, Iowa -- U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., promised not to increase taxes on the middle class, much like her rivals for the Democratic presidential nomination.

During a debate in Iowa, the former first lady said she would hike taxes on corporations and the wealthy while preserving tax cuts for the middle class, The Washington Times reported Friday.

"I want to restore the tax rates that we had in the '90s," Clinton told a debate broadcast on Iowa Public Television.

Before heading to Iowa for the debate, Clinton apologized to rival Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., for comments made by her national co-chairman Billy Shaheen.

Shaheen resigned from the Clinton campaign after suggesting that Obama's drug use as a young man could hurt him should be become the party's nominee.

Prior to Clinton's apology, the Obama campaign sent off a fundraising e-mail concerning the Shaheen remarks.
