Two Bend residents were badly injured in a head-on collision on icy Highway 20 near the Old Bend-Redmond Highway Monday morning, deputies reported.

Deschutes County Sheriff's deputies, Oregon State Police troopers, and Bend Fire personnel responded to the scene north of Bend about 7 a.m., December 17, Sheriff’s Deputy Lisa Jeffcott and Sgt. Ronny Dozier said.

According to a news release, Jacob A. Vinson, 28, apparently lost control of his 2006 Toyota Tundra pickup and crossed into the path of an oncoming vehicle driven by Robert D. Cordes, striking it head-on.

Cordes, 50, was trapped inside his 1995 Ford F150 pickup and was extricated by Bend Fire personnel, Jeffcott and Dozier said.

Both men were badly injured.  Vinson was taken to St. Charles Medical Center in Bend by ground ambulance, and having sustained more severe injuries, Cordes was transported by AirLife helicopter.  As of reports Monday afternoon, Vinson was in serious condition and Cordes critical condition.

Oregon Department of Transportation personnel closed Highway 20 and diverted traffic for about one hour, the deputies said.
