TORONTO -- Almost half the passengers on a flight from Israel to Toronto were quarantined after several people became sick with flu-like symptoms.

The Air Canada flight from Tel Aviv landed about 9 p.m. Tuesday and more than 75 of the 201 passengers aboard were detained and screened by health officials, the Toronto Star reported.

Passenger Matt Coleman, 19, told the newspaper eight people had become very sick during the flight.

"They started getting feverish and throwing up in the lavatories," he said.

However, Air Canada representative Angela Mah said only three people fell ill with flu-like symptoms.

"It is our standard operating procedure to have health officials meet the aircraft on arrival in cases like this," said Mah.

The Toronto Sun said three of the travelers were hospitalized and the others released.
