BEIRUT, Lebanon -- A powerful explosion Tuesday killed at least three people and destroyed a car belonging to the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanese media said.

At least seven other people were injured by the blast, which occurred in the predominately Christian Dora-Karantina neighborhood just north of the Lebanese capital, KUNA, the Kuwait News Agency, reported.

Lebanese television showed footage of the destroyed car and burning vehicles on the street. The Lebanese media reports said the targeted vehicle belonged to the U.S. Embassy but a Western diplomatic source couldn't confirm the deaths, CNN said.

Lebanon has been rocked by violence as pro- and anti-Syrian lawmakers fight over naming a new president following the expiration of the term of Lebanese President Emile Lahoud in late November.
