KABUL, Afghanistan - A roadside bomb exploded in southern Afghanistan Tuesday, killing a 26-year-old Canadian soldier and injured another.

Richard Renaud, a member of the 12th Regiment of Blinde du Canada, was killed when his armored vehicle struck the bomb, CTV News reported.

"It's what the insurgents are doing -- they're using IEDs (improvised explosive devices), their weapon of choice," Brig. Gen. Guy Laroche was quoted as telling reporters in Kandahar.

The injured soldier, who had not been identified, was treated at a hospital at Kandahar Airfield, the report said.

Renaud's death brought to 77 the number of Canadian military personnel who have died in Afghanistan since 2002, the report said. Canada has about 2,500 troops based in Kandahar.
