The results of this month’s traffic saturation patrol conducted Wednesday by the Multi-Agency Traffic (MAT) team in school zones throughout Bend are in: 84 drivers were cited for speeding, and another 68 received warnings.

According to Bend Police Sgt. Kurt Koester, 11 officers from the Bend and Redmond Police Departments, Oregon State Police troopers, and Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies were out in force between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on January 16.

In addition to the speeding violations and warnings, four vehicles were impounded when their drivers were found to not have a valid operators license and one person was arrested on an outstanding warrant.

“Speed is a major contributing factor to accidents in school zones,” Koester said, adding that many injuries, fatalities and expensive property damage can result.

The next MAT team detail will be held in February although the location has yet to be determined, the sergeant said.
