CHARLOTTE, N.C. - National Hot Rod Association drag racer Doug Herbert's two sons were killed in a car crash in North Carolina, it was reported Sunday.

Herbert's sons, James, 12, and Jon, 18, reportedly were on their way to get some breakfast Saturday when they apparently collided with an oncoming vehicle while attempting to pass another car in Cornelius, WCNC-TV in Charlotte reported.

The TV station said both boys died at the scene, while those in the other vehicle were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at a local hospital.

While Herbert immediately returned home following the deadly crash, NHRA officials posted a message of condolences on the racing group's Web site Saturday night.

The accident sent shock waves through the surrounding community.

"I saw this wreck and thought, 'wow this is sad ... I feel bad for whoever was involved and their family'," one of the brothers' former classmates, Trevor Bray, told WCNC-TV.

"You don't ever want to think that's gonna happen to someone you know."
