Police believe that a man who was found dead of a gunshot wound near the ocean shoreline of a southern Oregon beach in Curry County Saturday afternoon committed suicide.

Oregon State Police (OSP) and Curry County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of a body on the beach about 1/3 mile south of Pistol River Wayside about 5 p.m., January 26.

Gary C. Spaulding, 54, with no known address, was found deceased near the surf line, and appeared to have been in the water for an unknown time period, OSP Detective John Riddle said.

While no weapon was recovered, Riddle said it is likely it may have been washed out into the ocean surf.

Spaulding’s recreation vehicle was found parked and locked at the Wayside parking area, and had apparently been there since Thursday evening.

Family members said they hadn’t heard from the deceased in several years, and that he’d been living in his RV as he traveled around the western U.S.  His last listed Oregon address, according to DMV records, was in Hood River.
