La Grande woman dies in collision on icy Highway 237

A 63-year old La Grande driver was killed Saturday afternoon when she lost control of her station wagon on ice and snow-covered Highway 237, crossed the centerline and crashed into an oncoming pickup, police reported.

Karen Kalac was traveling west near milepost 5 about 1:20 p.m., February 2, when the accident occurred, Oregon State Police (OSP) Sgt. Jason Stone said. Her 2007 Subaru struck a 2006 Dodge Ram 1-ton pickup driven by Aaron James Rhyne of Union.

Kalac was pronounced dead at the scene, the sergeant reported, and Rhyne was unharmed.

An investigation led by OSP troopers from the La Grande Area Command office is continuing.

According to a news release, troopers were assisted on scene by Union County Sheriff’s deputies, La Grande Fire Department, and Oregon Department of Transportation personnel.
