Tornadoes hit Arkansas, Tenn.

MEMPHIS - At least five people were reported dead in tornadoes that hit Arkansas and Tennessee late Tuesday.

In the Memphis, Tenn., area, some people were trapped in buildings brought down or damaged by the storms, The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal reported. They included students in a dorm at Union University in Jackson, Tenn.

The tornado sirens interrupted a Memphis City Council meeting, forcing the mayor, council members and anyone still working in the building to take shelter in the basement.

One man was killed in an office building near the Hickory Ridge Mall in Memphis. The mall also suffered heavy damage.

Neal Glover of Somerville in Fayette County when his truck overturned as he drove away from his home.

In Arkansas, a family of three, one of them a child, was killed in Pope County, CNN reported.

A tornado was also reported in Oxford, Miss.
