NUREMBERG, Germany -- Police are investigating the slashing deaths of two red pandas at the zoo in Nuremberg, Germany, it was reported.

The male and female pandas, which aren't much bigger than domestic cats, were found with their stomachs slit open by a sharp object in their enclosure Monday, Der Spiegel reported Wednesday.

"Both animals had their abdominal walls opened," the mayor's office said in a statement. "The injuries to the two pandas are virtually identical and examination by the Federal Office for Health and Food Safety found that they weren't caused by knife cuts but probably by a sharp instrument."

The pandas lived in the same enclosure with three muntjac deer but officials have ruled them out because they had gotten along with the pandas.

It's the second unusual incident at the zoo this year. In January, a polar bear ate her two cubs.
