BELGRADE, Serbia - Demonstrators protesting Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia attacked the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade Thursday, setting fires and breaking windows.

A burned body was found inside the building. An embassy spokeswoman said the dead person was not an employee because everyone had been accounted for, The Guardian reported.

Serbian police stood by as several hundred people split off from a large demonstration against Kosovo independence and broke into the embassy. A number of other embassies were attacked, including the British and Croatian.

U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack in Washington said the situation was under control, CNN reported.

"We are in contact with the Serbian government to ensure that they devote the appropriate assets to fulfill their international obligations to help protect diplomatic facilities in this case," McCormack said.

At the U.S. embassy, people standing outside cheered as invaders stood on balconies waving Serbian flags. The embassy had been closed since an attack earlier in the week, and only a few guards and other employees were inside.
