BRISTOL, Tenn. -- A Tennessee man gunned down four people in a Bristol public housing complex and then retreated to a family farm to kill himself, police said.
Police Chief Blaine Wade said Rusty Lee Rumley, 26, of Watauga -- armed with a .45-caliber handgun -- fatally shot his ex-girlfriend's mother, Francis Watson, 43, and her neighbor, Roy Malone, 55, outside the Edgemont Towers after asking for them help moving furniture, The Kingsport (Tenn.) Times-News reported.
Rumley then apparently went to an eighth-floor apartment and asked his former girlfriend, whose name hadn't been released, for a drink. When she went to the refrigerator, police said, Rumley fatally shot her current boyfriend, Brandon Roskos, 20, and a family friend, Danny Wayne Murray, 53, the Times-News reported.
At that point, the girl locked him out while he was "messing with his gun," Wade said, and Rumley fled in a pickup truck. About a half-hour later, authorities spotted the truck and gave chase. As officers tried to surround Rumley in a wooded area, they heard a shot and later found his body, the newspaper said.
Investigators said there had been no warnings of Rumley's intentions other than unconfirmed reports of him being "distraught" prior to the shootings.
