JERSEY CITY, N.J. - A former New Jersey police officer was sentenced Thursday to 11 years in prison for a drunken crash that killed a toddler and left his mother with brain damage.

Kevin Freibott, who pleaded guilty last year to vehicular homicide, must spend almost seven years behind bars before he will be eligible for parole, the Star-Ledger of Newark reported. Superior Court Judge Peter Vazquez imposed seven years for killing Jose Carlo Zelaya and four for injuring Ruth Zelaya, who was put in a coma.

Freibott had a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit when he struck the Zelaya family's car in the rear with his Jeep Cherokee on the Pulaski Skyway. He had a history of driving offenses, including one previous arrest for drunken driving.

During the sentencing, Jose Zelaya's father read a letter from his daughter. She said her brother had been taken from her after she waited 10 years for him.
