CHERVEN BRAG , Bulgaria - Eight people were burned to death Friday when the Sofia-Kardam overnight train burst into flames near Cherven Brag in northern Bulgaria, a report said.

Witnesses said a fluorescent light exploded in a sleeping car, setting sheets on fire, the Sofia News Agency said. There was no official cause of the fire pending further investigation.

Most of the 60 people on board the nine-car train were evacuated before the flames could spread, authorities said. Nine people were treated and released.

Rail officials said some passengers were trapped in sleeping compartments that had their doors locked.

The train was traveling from Sofia to Kardam, on the border with Romania.
