WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. - A 19-year-old Missouri man whose leg was cut off by a passing freight train was able to crawl away for help, police say.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported Friday that Joseph Alexander of Webster Groves, Mo., crawled 50 yards for help.

He flagged down a passing motorist, who called for help, the newspaper reported.

Alexander was airlifted to Barnes-Jewish Hospital, where he underwent surgery Friday. Doctors were unable to save his leg, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Alexander was found about 50 yards from his leg, the newspaper said. The train's engineer and its conductor were reportedly unaware the Galesburg, Ill.-bound train had hit someone.
