JERUSALEM -- The new Israeli state prosecutor told a legal committee of the Knesset Monday that Israel must combat corruption by civil servants and elected officials.

"We must fight (corruption), to prevent civil servants and elected representatives from shaking society's foundation," Moshe Lador told the Knesset Constitution, Law and Justice Committee, Haaretz said.

According to the Jerusalem Post Lador decried what he called "the PR practice of the accused" and said that criminal cases should not be decided by public opinion, but in the legal arena.

He also criticized cuts to the prosecution's budget, saying that without proper funding "it is impossible to enforce the law in an adequate and effective manner."
