A Bend-area man died and another was critically injured Friday night in a single vehicle crash on Highway 22-East near Gates, about 100 miles northwest of Bend. The driver lost control of his pickup on black ice, spun around, left the highway and struck a tree, said Oregon State Police.

Daniel Lynn Dickey, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident that occurred about 9:40 p.m. December 15 near milepost 38 on Highway 22-East when the 2004 Toyota Tundra pickup he was driving lost control, spun around, and left the highway.  The vehicle came to rest when it struck a large tree, impacting the driver’s side of the pickup.

The right-front passenger, 37-year old Christopher J. Cruz of Bend, was critically injured and transported by LifeFlight to Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland.

Cruz’s seven year-old daughter, Halley, a Salem resident, was in the rear seat and received minor injuries.  She was transported by ambulance to the Salem Hospital, treated and released.

Both two eastbound lanes and the single westbound lane of the highway remained open during the incident, which was one of several crashes that occurred on icy roads in the area at that time.

According to the OSP news release, all three people were wearing safety restraints.  Gates Fire Department personnel and the Oregon Department of Transportation assisted at the scene, and Salem Area Command OSP troopers are continuing the investigation.
