SAN FRANCISCO - A 10-vehicle pileup on the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco Wednesday left at least seven people injured, authorities said.

The crashes tied up afternoon traffic for hours, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. It apparently began when a station wagon heading north crossed at least one lane at mid-span and crossed into the southbound lane where it collided with three other cars head-on, the California Highway Patrol said. There is no median barrier -- only movable plastic tubes -- between the north- and south-bound lanes on the bridge.

It was not known what caused the driver to veer into oncoming traffic, the Chronicle reported.

Six people were taken to San Francisco General Hospital, and one to Marin General Hospital. The highway patrol said the victims ranged from complaints of pain to major injuries.
