PHOENIX -- A dog tied to a fence in a south Phoenix yard was killed by a swarm of angry bees that an expert said was apparently just passing through the neighborhood.

The dog's owner and her cousin tried to rescue the Dalmation mix but the dog died shortly after firefighters arrived at the scene, KPHO-TV, Phoenix, reported Wednesday.

Owner Chantell Amenta said she had to chain her dog Spot to a fence because he was constantly running away.

When Amenta and her cousin tried to save Spot, the bees moved from the dog to the two women.

Amenta said her cousin nearly stopped breathing when the swarm attacked them, the report said, and firefighters were stung as they rushed to save the two women and the dog.

A bee expert who examined the area found no hive and said it appeared the swarm was just passing through.
