BEND, Ore. – Bend Police officers were able to stop an apparently distraught man who was contemplating jumping to his death from an overpass in northeast Bend Saturday morning.

Bend Police Lt. Gary Mack said a police sergeant was driving north on NE Third Street shortly after 7 a.m., May 24, when he noticed a man on the wrong side of the railing on the Third Street overpass who looked like he was going to jump.

Police closed the street to traffic and began negotiating with the man, who was eventually grabbed by three officers and pulled to safety before he could jump, the lieutenant said.

The man whom police declined to identify, was transported to St. Charles Medical Center then released to Deschutes County Mental Health officials, Mack stated in a news release.

No charges were filed.
